A friend and fellow historian, Margot Dixon, has released a new book Captain Scott’s Scrapbook. Now retired, Margot was well known for years at Upper Canada Village as the dressmaker among other historical pursuits.
During the pandemic, Margot discovered a scrapbook among family albums of one Captain Samuel Frederick Scott. Using the scrapbook with family photo albums, transcribing documents and letters saved there, researching online and contacting museums in Canada, the United States and the UK, Margot compiled a biography of Scott’s exciting and adventurous life, 1847-1905, on the seven seas, facing storms, shipwreck and even a Chilean warship, turning to a life ashore six times, each time to be called back to the water.

"A fascinating examination of this branch of my family tree." — S. Forward
"My mom really liked your book. She said there were many things and places she hadn't heard of before. A darn good read, thanks for publishing it !!" — H. Bolton
"A must read for experiencing life on the high seas. Mutinies, mining and mysteries are all there in this book; ably crafted by historian and archivist, Margot Dixon. A page turner, that reminded me of the 1945 American adventure film "The Spanish Main" starring Maureen O'Hara." — Mohan Goel
"May I thank you most sincerely for this fine volume by author Margot Dixon, so compellingly written that it was hard to put down. The courage and integrity of this long-ago captain of sailing ships shines on every page. The terrors of ocean travel are set down as well. No wonder the author dedicated the book to ‘all those who live in peril on the sea.’ No less remarkable is the incredible research done by the author to track down this captain’s life through bits of paper glued into a scrapbook. The whole is a wonderful read and I thank you for it." — Warmly, Mrs. Nancy Webster
"I'm reading your book and finding it quite amusing. In particular, I enjoy when you get to something that makes you curious and you actually print the question that's on your mind. I can't get over how you were able to piece together so much of Captain Scott and his family's life based on a scrapbook.” T. Cloutier
Just finished reading Captain Scott's Scrapbook. What a fascinating story. The frequency and variety of the Captain's adventures are almost dizzying! The tremendous amount of research involved in piecing together the Captain's life is amazing. Congratulations Margot on this success!

I had a chance meeting with the author on a bike ride last summer and knew I had to give her book a read; and I'm so glad I did! As a writer of novels myself, I can't imagine the hours she spent researching and organizing all the information that resulted in the book. It really does bring to life a man that led a fascinating life! Well worth the time to read it.
